The Fathomless Sea – a Tafsir of the Illustrious Qur’an (Al-Baḥr al-Madīd fī tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Majīd) draws on the exegetical tradition, for example al-Bayḍāwī and Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī among others, clarifying the unitary science (tawḥīd), legal rulings (aḥkām), Arabic words and expressions, and the histories and narratives of the Noble Book. The author appends indications (ishārāt) to each passage on matters pertaining to the sulūk – wayfaring of people to knowledge (ma‘rifah) of their Lord, and a great deal about those who have arrived.
The author’s work emerges from the North- and West-African and Andalusian transmission of the School of Madina that sees the dīn as an undivided unity of Islam, Iman and Ihsan and of sharī‘ah, ṭarīqah and ḥaqīqah.
The biography of the author here included shows how well-qualified he is to transmit this seamless integration, rather than re-joining what had previously been sundered.
In this volume, after the substantial introduction to the author’s life and works, there is commentary on the Fātiḥah of the Book and Sūrat al-Baqarah.
Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Mahdī ibn ‘Ajībah al-Ḥasanī (1161 – 1224 AH) was Ḥasanī by lineage, Tetouan was his abode, he gained knowledge in Fes, and he was Māliki by madhhab and Shādhilī by ṭarīqah. He gained the traditional learning of his time in fiqh, hadith, and Qur’anic sciences, and later took the ṭarīqah at the hands of his Shaykh al-Būzīdī.
